The Northern Circuit
Serengeti National Park
Serengeti National Park, located in northern Tanzania, is a world-famous wildlife sanctuary and a crown jewel of African safaris. Covering an expansive area of 14,750 square kilometers, the Serengeti is renowned for its endless golden plains, teeming wildlife, and breathtaking natural beauty. The park forms part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem, which includes the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve. Its unparalleled biodiversity and the spectacular Great Migration—one of the largest animal migrations on Earth—make it a bucket-list destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers worldwide.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Serengeti National Park is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo) alongside over 2 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and hundreds of other species. Its ecosystems, ranging from vast grasslands to acacia woodlands and rocky outcrops, support a remarkable diversity of wildlife. Beyond the incredible game viewing, the park also offers cultural insights into the traditions of the indigenous Maasai people who live in its surrounding areas. Serengeti’s iconic landscapes and wildlife make it one of the most celebrated and sought-after safari destinations in Africa.
Meaning of the Name "Serengeti"
The name Serengeti originates from the Maasai word Siringet, which means “the place where the land runs on forever” or “endless plains.” This poetic description perfectly captures the vast, open landscapes that define the Serengeti ecosystem. For centuries, the Maasai people have lived in harmony with this sprawling wilderness, grazing their livestock on the grasslands that stretch as far as the eye can see. To the Maasai, the Serengeti is more than just a place; it is a sacred land that embodies freedom, sustenance, and coexistence with nature.
The meaning of Serengeti reflects the park’s essence—a seemingly infinite expanse of pristine wilderness that hosts one of the most dynamic ecosystems on Earth. Its vast plains serve as the stage for dramatic wildlife spectacles, such as the Great Migration, and symbolize the raw, unspoiled beauty of Africa. This timeless name has become synonymous with adventure, discovery, and the spirit of exploration, drawing travelers from around the globe to experience the awe-inspiring landscapes that inspired its name.

The Best Time to Visit Serengeti Month by Month Guide
January – March
This is the calving season, with thousands of wildebeest giving birth in the southern Serengeti. It’s an incredible time to witness newborns and the predators they attract, such as lions and cheetahs. The lush green scenery enhances the beauty of the plains, making it perfect for photography.
April – May
Known as the long rainy season, this period sees fewer tourists, offering a more exclusive safari experience. While some roads can be muddy, the Serengeti is at its greenest, and wildlife remains abundant, especially around water sources. Birdwatching is exceptional during this time.
June – July
The dry season begins, and the Great Migration moves northward toward the Grumeti River. This is the best time to witness dramatic river crossings and large predator activity. The weather is cooler, and game viewing is excellent across the park.
August – September
The migration reaches the northern Serengeti, near the Mara River. Witness the thrilling spectacle of wildebeest crossing the crocodile-infested waters. Dry weather and short grass make it easier to spot wildlife, making this peak safari season.
October – November
As the short rains begin, the migration starts moving back south toward the central Serengeti. Wildlife remains active, and the landscapes begin to transform into a vibrant green. It’s a quieter time with fewer crowds.
December
The migration reaches the southern Serengeti plains, preparing for the calving season once again. This month offers a perfect mix of wildlife action, lush scenery, and warm weather, making it an excellent time for game drives and photography.
